SAMSHA Wildfire Recovery Support

SAMSHA Disaster Distress Helpline (DDH) is the first national hotline dedicated to providing year-round disaster crisis counseling. This toll-free, multilingual, crisis support service is available 24/7 to all residents in the U.S. and its territories who are experiencing emotional distress related to natural or human-caused disasters.

Trauma Survivor's Foundation

The Trauma Survivors Foundation seeks to improve the lives of children and families who have experienced a traumatic event by providing mental health services through a network of trained trauma therapists.  They grant scholarships to high school and college seniors who are seeking careers in the mental health field in order to promote further research into trauma psychology.  They help firefighters, police and EMS with scholarships to attend approved training classes. They train emergency service personnel to provide crisis intervention when a traumatic event occurs.

Consumer Price Gouging Protection

If you believe you have been improperly overcharged for goods, services, or housing, keep your records and receipts, and file a price gouging complaint using DCBA’s online complaint reporting tool. There, you can report the location of the incident and upload documents directly to DCBA’s investigators for follow-up. You can also reach DCBA by phone at (800) 593-8222.

Consumer Support for Insurance

The Department of Insurance recovers hundreds of millions of dollars for consumers every year through investigating complaints and conducting market conduct exams. In 2018 alone, the Department recovered $154 million in claims and premiums on behalf of wildfire survivors and other Californians. Consumers who feel they have been treated unfairly by an insurance company, agent or any licensee, are urged to contact the Department’s toll-free Consumer Hotline at (800) 927-4357. Check the website for upcoming trainings on dealing with insurance, or for options if you do not have insurance.

The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank is working with government agencies, nonprofit and faith-based partners and others to respond to the fires throughout Los Angeles County.

EMDR for PTSD

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an eight-phase psychotherapy approach that helps people recover from trauma without having to talk at length about the traumatic experience(s). It is an effective therapy with a lot of research support. An EMDR therapist will help you to tell important aspects of your story and will be mindful of how your culture and personal context impact you.

Property Tax Reassessment

You may be eligible for tax relief if your property is damaged or destroyed by a calamity, such as fire or flooding. To qualify, you must file an Application for Reassessment: Property Damaged or Destroyed by Misfortune or Calamity (ADS-820) with the Assessor’s Office within 12 months from the date the property was damaged or destroyed. The loss must exceed $10,000 of current market value. In addition, if your property was substantially damaged or destroyed by a Governor-declared disaster, Prop.19 provides for your property's tax base to be transferred to a comparable property within the same county or another county in California.

Support for Musicians

MusiCares provides crisis relief, preventive care, recovery resources, and need-based financial assistance for people across all music professions. They are offering relief for working musicians effected by the wildfires. MusiCares is a resource to music professionals impacted by natural disasters, including the fires in the Los Angeles area. They provide short-term and long-term disaster relief related to evacuation and relocation costs, instrument replacement/repair, home damage, medical care, mental health services, & other essential living needs. U.S. SBA offers loans to homeowners or renters to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate and personal property, including automobiles. They also offer loans to businesses to repair or replace disaster-damaged property owned by the business, including real estate, inventories, supplies, machinery and equipment. Businesses of any size are eligible. Private, non-profit organizations such as charities, churches, private universities, etc., are also eligible.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI provides education, support, and advocacy to improve the lives of those living with mental illness, as well as their families and friends, mental health professionals, and all who share NAMI’s vision and mission.

Pick up a Healing Library Kit for Children

The healing journey after a traumatic event can be challenging. Developed in collaboration with LA County Department of Mental Health and the California Mental Health Services Act with content created and inspired by The Healing Library, these circulating Kits provide evidence-based materials that can support families navigating difficult experiences like separation, divorce, and the death of a pet. Most libraries outside the evacuation zones remain open.
